Can Exercise Really Improve Academic Performance? Here’s What the Research Says

It turns out that dusting off your gym bag might be one of the smartest moves you can make - and not just for your fitness. According to a 2026 study published in the Journal of Political Economy, a bit of physical exercise could actually make you better at thinking, learning, and staying focused.

The study, titled Exercise Improves Academic Performance by Cappelen, Charness, Ekström, Gneezy, and Tungodden, tested what would happen if students were given a free gym membership. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t just a nice gesture - it was a brain booster.

What did they find?

In a carefully controlled trial, university students were split into two groups - one received a gym card (so the barrier to exercise was removed), and the other didn’t.

The result? The students who got the gym card:

  • Exercised more

  • Had better academic outcomes

  • Were less likely to fail exams

  • Were less likely to drop out of their classes

And it wasn’t just about getting a bit more flexible or lifting heavier weights. The paper points to something deeper: exercise appeared to support a healthier lifestyle overall and increased self-control - both of which played a role in improved academic performance.

In the researchers’ own words:

“We provide evidence showing that exercise caused a healthier lifestyle and increased perceived self-control, which ultimately improved academic performance.” (Cappelen et al., 2026)

So yes - moving your body regularly doesn’t just help you feel good; it might actually make you better at life.

So what’s this got to do with gymnastics?

You might not be a student anymore, and exams may be (thankfully) behind you - but the science doesn’t stop applying when you hit adulthood. Whether you’re looking to shake off the cobwebs, learn a cool new skill, or just get a little more headspace, adding a dose of structured movement to your week could be just what you need.
