"Watch This!" Why Every Gymnast Wants to Show Off Their Latest Skill (And This Time, You Get to Join In)

If your child does gymnastics, you've almost certainly heard the words...

"Watch this!"

Perhaps it was a forward roll on the living room carpet. Maybe it was a carefully choreographed cartwheel across the garden. If you're particularly lucky, you've even had an enthusiastic demonstration in the middle of the supermarket because they simply couldn't wait until they got home.

Children are wonderfully proud of learning something new.

And quite right too.

There's something magical about seeing a skill that felt impossible a few weeks ago suddenly click into place. It might not seem like much to anyone else, but to the child who's worked hard to master it, it's a huge achievement.

Of course, once they've shown you... they usually have another question.

"Can you do it?"

This is often followed by an awkward silence while most grown-ups suddenly become fascinated by literally anything else.

The washing up.

Checking the weather.

Reading the back of a cereal packet.

Anything that doesn't involve attempting a forward roll in front of a brutally honest six-year-old.

The truth is, many children would absolutely love their grown-ups to join in. They spend weeks learning new skills and can't wait to share them with the people cheering them on every week from the sidelines.

That's exactly why we decided to turn the tables for one morning this summer.

Time to Swap the Spectator Seat

Our Train with Your Grown Up session isn't about seeing who can do the best cartwheel, and we promise there won't be any Olympic-style judging paddles waiting at the end.

Instead, it's an opportunity to experience gymnastics together.

You'll begin with a coach-led warm-up before moving around the gym learning basic gymnastics skills on floor, vault, bars and beam. Your child gets to show you what they've been learning, you'll both have the chance to try new things together, and there will almost certainly be plenty of laughter along the way.

Children absolutely love seeing the adults in their lives having a go.

Partly because it's fun.

Partly because they enjoy sharing something they love.

And partly because discovering their grown up wobbles on a beam just as much as they did once upon a time is surprisingly reassuring.

It's Not About Being Good At Gymnastics

If the thought of joining a gymnastics session makes you wonder whether your hamstrings are about to file an official complaint, don't worry.

This session isn't designed for experienced gymnasts.

It's designed for families.

Nobody is expecting perfect technique or impressive flexibility. In fact, your child probably won't care whether you manage a forward roll at all. They'll simply love the fact that you joined them.

Children remember moments like these.

Years from now, they probably won't remember exactly which skill they practised that Thursday morning in August, but there's every chance they'll remember laughing with you in the gym, encouraging each other and doing something a little different together.

Sometimes that's the bit that matters most.

A Morning to Make Memories

The session finishes with a gentle stretch and every participant will receive a certificate to take home. More importantly, you'll head home having shared something your child genuinely loves.

Who knows, you might even discover gymnastics is harder than it looks.

Although if your child has been telling you that all along, perhaps it's best not to admit they were right.
