From Wobbly First Steps to a Full Class: A Parent's Guide to Preschool Gymnastics at Wickers This September

If you're looking for preschool gymnastics classes in Lancing or nearby in Worthing, the good news is that "preschool" doesn't actually mean one single thing at Wickers. It covers everything from a relaxed drop in session for a child who's only just found their feet, right through to a proper teacher led class for a confident four year old working towards their first real skills. Wherever your little one currently sits on that spectrum, there's a September start waiting for them.

You'll know the feeling. One week they're wobbling between the sofa and your leg, the next they're attempting to climb the bookshelf like it owes them money. Development at this age moves in odd little bursts, which makes it genuinely tricky to know what kind of activity actually fits. Do they need something structured, or something they can just explore in their own time? Do they need you right there next to them, or are they ready to work a bit more independently with a coach? At Wickers, you don't need to have that fully worked out before booking, since our preschool sessions are built to grow alongside your child rather than expecting them to arrive already sorted.

Not Walking Confidently Yet? Start With Stay and Play

Stay and Play is where most families begin. It's a relaxed, exploration led session, no set routine, no pressure, just soft play, foam pit, trampettes and gymnastics apparatus, with you right there alongside them the whole time. Sessions run for two and a half hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and you're welcome to arrive and leave whenever suits within that window, which makes it a genuinely low stress choice if naptimes or older sibling pickups tend to dictate your day.

Confident Walkers: Gloworms

Once your little one is a competent walker, Gloworms is usually the natural next step. Running Mondays and Fridays, for either 45 minutes or a full hour, sessions start with a musical warm up led by our staff, move into apparatus play, and finish with a song. Every child gets a hand stamp and works towards a certificate, small things, but genuinely motivating at this age. It's still very much parent and child together, so if your toddler isn't quite ready to be without you yet, this keeps that closeness while introducing a bit more structure than Stay and Play.

Ready for Something Calmer? Sensory Snails

Not every child thrives in a bright, busy, musical environment, and that's exactly why Sensory Snails exists. Suitable for children up to four, sessions run on Thursdays with numbers kept small, no radio, reduced lighting, and zoned play areas designed for a gentler pace. If mainstream toddler groups have ever felt like a bit much for your child, this is worth a proper look before ruling gymnastics out altogether.

Ready to Work More Independently: Butterflies

For three to four year olds who are ready to take a step back from you and work directly with a coach, Butterflies is the next stage up. Sessions run five days a week including Saturdays, and follow a proper structure, musical warm up, apparatus work, and progression through basic gymnastics skills, all while still being genuinely fun rather than formal. Hand stamps and attendance certificates keep the motivation going, and it's worth knowing that British Gymnastics membership is required by a child's second session, something easy to sort in advance so it doesn't hold up their start.

Why September Is Worth Thinking About Now

New term energy tends to ripple through even the youngest members of the family, nurseries reopening, older siblings back in uniform, routines shifting all over again. Starting a preschool session in September gives your little one one predictable, familiar hour each week right when everything else is changing, and gives you a proper reason to get out of the house on a day that might otherwise disappear into snack requests and Peppa Pig.

How We Helps

Because these sessions are designed to flow into each other, Stay and Play into Gloworms, Gloworms or Sensory Snails into Butterflies, you're not really choosing a class for right now, you're choosing a starting point in a journey that can keep pace with your child as they grow. Our coaches get to know families well over time, which makes those transitions between sessions feel natural rather than like starting from scratch each time.

Booking Information

Sessions can be booked directly through our website, with waiting list options available where a session is currently full. If you're not sure which session best fits your child's age or stage, do get in touch, we're always happy to talk it through before you book.
