It All Starts With a Cartwheel…

There’s something about a cartwheel that feels like a proper milestone.

It’s often one of the first “real” gymnastics skills children learn, the one they practise in the garden, attempt in the living room when they think no one’s watching, and proudly show off at every possible opportunity. Slightly wonky at first, then gradually straighter, stronger, and a bit more controlled.

And while it might look simple once it clicks, getting there, and improving it, takes a bit more than just enthusiasm and a patch of grass.

A Workshop That Meets Them Where They Are

On Thursday 28th May, from 9.00am to 10.30am, we’re running a cartwheel-focused workshop designed to support children at different stages, whether they’re just starting out or already confidently upside down but looking to refine their technique.

For younger gymnasts, especially those aged 4 and above, this is a chance to properly break the skill down. Not just “have a go and hope for the best,” but understand how it works, where hands and feet should go, and how to build it step by step.

For those who already have a cartwheel, the focus shifts slightly. It becomes about control, alignment, and exploring variations that build strength and confidence for what comes next.

Why Cartwheels Deserve a Bit of Attention

It’s easy to overlook the basics once a child can “kind of do it,” but cartwheels are one of those foundation skills that everything else builds from.

A stronger cartwheel leads to:

  • Better balance

  • Improved coordination

  • More confidence when learning new skills

Taking the time to improve it early on makes a noticeable difference later, even if that progress feels quite small at the time.

A Calm, Focused Start to the Day

Being a drop-and-go session, children can come in, settle quickly, and get stuck into the session without distractions. There’s a slightly different feel compared to a regular class, a bit more space to concentrate, a bit more time to practise, and a bit more opportunity to get things right.

It’s still fun, still relaxed, but with just enough structure to help things click.

Open to Everyone

The session is open to both Wickers members and non-members, which makes it a great option for anyone local to Worthing, Lancing, or nearby areas who is thinking about gymnastics but hasn’t quite taken the plunge yet.

No pressure, no expectations, just a chance to try something new or build on what’s already there.

Recognition of their hard work

At the end of the session, each child will receive a certificate, which, if past experience is anything to go by, will be shown to at least three family members before the day is out.

More importantly, they’ll leave with a clearer sense of what they can do, and what they’re working towards next.
